The family introduction ceremony usually precedes the engagement and wedding in most Nigerian cultures. It usually occurs after a lady says yes to her groom’s proposal. It may be a small affair or as elaborate as an engagement ceremony just like Morounmubo & Olumide’s.
In Yoruba custom, the introduction ceremony is held at the bride’s family house. The groom and his family visit bearing gifts such as fruits, soft drinks, wine, alligator pepper and kola nut. Just as the name implies, it is an occasion for both families to get acquainted and also deliberate on when and how to execute the wedding.
In return, the bride’s family acts as the host, offering food and drinks to their guests. Prayers, music and celebration are the order of the day.
