Wedding Planning Lessons From #KDLAGOS2021

Only one wedding went down in Lagos over the weekend. We apologize for any other ceremony that “attempted” to hold. The union of Adebola Williams and Kehinde Daniels had all our love and attention ( See what we did there?) Adebola Willams (popularly known as Debola Lagos) accomplished media entrepreneur and political consultant tied the knot with Kehinde Daniels, daughter of former Governor of Ogun State, Gbenga Daniels.

Like any good wedding expert, we were in attendance ( as secret agents) and have some major tea to spill. Sit tight, wedding planners and vendors!

Control the crowd

Doing the bare minimum for crowd control is acceptable for a regular wedding. But when you are hosting a wedding carnival in Nigeria’s entertainment capital, you have to go above and beyond. Access cards must be closely monitored and enforced without any reservations.

Do you know who I am? Yes, a person without an access card. Wait outside!

Food Quality

We don’t know where the vendors got it wrong. Were they understaffed or simply overwhelmed by the turnout? No matter the excuses. There is no reason for serving food that looks suspect and presenting it carelessly (Bigi Cola was served at some points, No judgement, this sachet economy is hard) We would give the vendors the benefit of doubt and assume that they were simply overwhelmed. But please read the brief and prepare adequately!
The best weddings are where everybody gets a similar experience regardless of where they are seated or who they know.

Points to the groom’s side? We heard the quality of food and experiences were much better over there.

Timing

To be fair, this point is just our non-Lagos genes protesting out loud. We would like to get home by midnight after having a good time. Not stifling yawns at 10 pm as Sunny Ade continues to groove for the oldies ( No disrespect to the King). But we are more inclined to legwork and amapiano. The after-party looked lit on Instagram though, But we had to rush home. Lagos is not safe!

Event coordination

Why did we need more than one MC for the entire event? ( Editors note- Well you said it was a wedding carnival) While we will take any excuse to see Ebuka in an agbada but Bovi, Ebuka, Yemi Shodimu and Bisi Olatilo to host one wedding was an overkill. One MC could have done so much more for the event’s coordination.

The Politics of Souvenir Distribution

This one is a problem that continues to characterize the biggest of weddings and elude the best planners in search of solutions. It doesn’t matter that you bought the complete aso-ebi ( Special shout out to the geniuses who figured how to make one yard of aso ebi into complete outfits. We see you and respect the hustle) and your tailor acted out of character and refused to disgrace you. If you don’t have a sure plug, you will go home empty-handed

It doesn’t matter where you sit, the politics of souvenir distribution defies sitting position. It thrives on facial recognition only. We don’t have any advice for this one, it’s just painful

(Editors note- Scratch that, we have some advice. Make sure your party plug is a woman, All men do is get their guests, good seats and drinks. Women will hustle everything plus souvenirs for you.)

Big doesn’t mean better

There’s always the temptation to grade the class or cost of a wedding according to the size. We beg to disagree, In fact, repeat after us; size does not matter!. Small intimate experiences are easier to control. You can keep an eye over guest lists, seating and entertainment. It’s better than arriving at an event and waiting for 15 minutes to get a seat.

If you’re going to disregard our advice and go big, be prepared for anything your eyes see.

What we like

Before you run off and say this is a bad belle post. Our experience had some major highlights, We absolutely loved seeing your favourite celebs all decked out in traditional attire. We will resist the urge to do a fashion police post. Dear celebrity, it is not your fault. You had good intentions, the devil just chose to use your stylist and tailor.

Seeing, Timi Dakolo, Waje and MI perform was also a major highlight. While we were rejecting the one naira part of the song ( Because this country is hard already abeg). We absolutely loved the vibes at #KDLAGOS2021

See you at the next wedding. P.S Remember to be good wedding guests.
